Christchurch, Cartonnage, Egyptian Mummy - Tash pen Khonsu

General Description:
As described in the conservation treatment report by Amy Ng (1), the cartonnage is structurally very fragile and in poor condition. There are abrasions to the painted surface but the paint appears to be well bound and is not friable. Numerous superficial cracks are found in the top painted layers as well as major cracks and tears that extend though all layers. There are areas of complete loss of the gesso and linen. Blotches of a light brown coloured paint (or other liquid) have stained the surface of the head piece. The remaining linen on the leg plate is creased, with frayed edges and areas of loss.

The chest plate is in particularly poor condition and suffers from warping, deformation, cracks and splitting with large areas of loss mainly caused by a previous restoration. A strong, fine woven fabric has been used to line the back of the plate using a dark brownish black coloured adhesive. The adhesive has an uneven texture, is very strong and brittle and has failed in many areas. On the front a very strong, brown material has been used to fill losses in the chest plate. There are significant cracks between the original surface and the fill, caused by the excessive strength of the binder in the fill material.
